Our 5 favourite Christmas Traditions in Malaga
1. Christmas markets
One of the most popular traditions in Spain during the holiday season is the Christmas market, or “Feria de Navidad.” These markets are held in cities and towns throughout the country, and feature stalls selling traditional Christmas decorations, gifts, and treats, as well as live entertainment and activities for kids.
2. Nativity scenes
Nativity scenes, or “Belén,” are a common sight in Spanish homes and churches during the Christmas season. These miniature displays depict the birth of Jesus, and often include figurines of Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, as well as shepherds, animals, and other characters from the story.
3. Christmas Eve dinner
In Malaga, Christmas Eve is a time for families to gather together and enjoy a special meal. Many people in Spain enjoy a traditional feast of roast lamb or pork, as well as vegetables and desserts like turrón, a type of nougat made with almonds and honey. Luckily, we already shared with you our chosen places for the best tapas in Malaga and our favourite vegan and vegetarian restaurants.
4. “El Gordo” lottery
One of the most popular traditions in Spain during the Christmas season is “El Gordo,” or the “Fat One,” lottery. This annual lottery draw takes place on December 22nd, and is the largest and most famous lottery in the world. Tickets for “El Gordo” are sold throughout the country, and people often form syndicates with friends, family, and coworkers in order to buy tickets together. The lottery draw is televised and attended by a large audience, and the winning numbers are announced by children from a school in Madrid. The prize money for “El Gordo” is distributed among the winning tickets, with the largest prize going to the ticket with the number corresponding to the “Fat One.” Many people in Spain consider it good luck to win “El Gordo,” and the tradition has become an important part of the Christmas celebration in the country.
5. Three Kings Day
The celebration of Christmas in Malaga doesn’t end on December 25th. Instead, it continues on until January 6th, when the country celebrates “El Dia de los Reyes,” or Three Kings Day. On this day, children receive gifts from the three wise men, and parades featuring floats and costumed characters are held in cities and towns across the country.
In addition to these traditional celebrations, Christmas in Spain is also marked by a number of other cultural events, such as carol singing, Christmas light displays, and festive decorations in homes and public spaces.
